How sad that the people love their church more than the Church does. On this St. Patrick's Day, this once beautiful tribute to the strength of the Irish in America lies in virtual ruin, when the people who have given their souls to the Church want so badly to save it. As Cardinal Egan stands on the steps of the privately funded St. Patrick's Cathedral tomorrow, I wonder if St Brigid will be there with him, looking down with a tear in her eye, and I wonder if he will think of her and how her legacy, the Irish in New York City who so proudly dedicated a once beautiful place of worship to her, are also shedding a tear wondering why this has happened. If St. Brigid's was on 5th Ave, I'm sure her fate would not be what it is today. A sad commentary on how hard the Irish have worked to get where they are, and how where they came from is forgotten.
