A. Kirsch opines that "artificial techniques of suspense..., along with a clunky prose style, make [Matthew Stewart's *The Courtier and the Heretic*] less good than it deserves or wants to be...."
With no concern for Stewart's philosophical acumen OR the worth of his remarkably readable book, I cannot imagine a style that Kirsch would consider "un-clunky."
