A Fourth Mayor Quits Bloomberg Anti-Gun Group
in response to reader comment: Gun Control Is Necessary

Frank, then by your logic, a hammer or a screwdriver needs to be registered. They can kill, too. And someone could probably get closer to you with one, much easier. One swing with either of those, and you're toast.

The fact is, more crimes are actually prevented by the use of private handguns than damage "caused". Estimates are anywhere from 150K (anti-gun numbers) to over 2 million (pro-gun numbers) per year.

Your EMT training should tell you that guns don't kill people. Massive trauma or blood loss does (in the case of a gun being used as a weapon--the same things as knives, blunt hits with a hammer, or a stabbing with a screwdriver.

If those other tools don't kill, then any other inanimate object won't kill either (like a firearm). The majority of guns today are used for anything but shooting people (an overwhelming majority). You have 300 million guns in the US alone, with over 80 million LEGAL owners. You have something between 13K and 15K actual murders committed with a firearm as the weapon. That's a VERY small percentage.

Do I want criminals stopped? Yes. Am I willing to give up (and have other law-abiding citizens give up) the right to defend themselves? No way. Fix it so the crooks aren't just back out on the street enacting a repeat performance.
