Far worse than a few incidents of meanness, committed by (really) a few bad apples, is the neglect shown by this administratiion for the needs of the troops in the field and the needs of wounded and disabled veterans. Lacking body armor, lacking vehicles armored as they should be and overextended by repeated tours in combat zones, they are then stop-lossed into staying longer still. It is all abuse of the worst kind.
These are our children: every one is some mother's son!
When they return they are discouraged from seeking care, denied disability benefits and warehoused in horrible conditions while they await treatment. Though it is getting worse, this is nothing new. Veterans from all our recent wars have often had to stuggle to get care, to afford care and to somehow survive without the care and help they need. Some luck out and get their needs met, but many are stonewalled and denied. Some commit suicide. Remember Agent Orange? Gulf War Syndrome?
With rising numbers of wounded and disabled, this administration has flat-lined the budget for the Veterans Administration--and that budget was already inadequate.
Who is standing up for veterans? Well Democratic Representatives Lynne Woolsey and Barbara Lee have introduced H.R. 508 which includes guaranteed medicial care for veterans. Get your Representative to support it and your Senator to support similar legislation. Get those legislators who claim to support the troops to put their money where their mouth is.
Yours for peace and decent treatment of veterans as well.
