On Housing, ‘Worst Is Yet To Come'

Submitted by Kenneth J. Jones, Mar 28, 2007 05:01

Mr. Krystofiak is apparently not a student of history. IN FACT, during the worst real estate markets since the great depression, particularly that which occurred simultaneously with the era of the massive S&L failures of the late 1980's thru the early 1990's, there was no value lost in any quarterly data* in either the nation as a whole, nor in any of the 4 regional real estate markets (save a slight decline in 1 quarter in the northeast region).

Even at a time when the federal government spend upward of $300 billion on bank related bailouts (equal to about $1 trillion today), when unemployment was double what it is today, when credit restructuring opportunities did not exist as they do today, and when bankruptcy is no longer the end-all-be-all that exacerbated the problem during the S&L crisis, it seems to me that Mr. Krystofiak is merely making hysterical claims to gain attention for either himself or his organization.

It's true, that no one can predict the future. However, aside from paranoia and resulting panic, there is absolutely no economic basis to even hint at a nose-diving residential real estate market, nor a decline in residential real estate values.
