Cardinal Egan's Future Rests in Pope's Hands
in response to reader comment: Hoping for Cardinal Egan's Retirement

I, too, agree that Cardinal Egan's resignation should be accepted, but for far different reasons than those stated in the Rev. Grosswirth's comment. Yes, a strong Cardinal is needed for this influential and very visible Archdiocese, but that strength needs to be directed at leading the church in the Catholic Faith, not petitioning the Pope to lift celibacy requirements (which he has already emphatically said will not happen) or to "allow" women Priests (why not simply lift the requirement to go to Mass... that should solve the Priest shortage!). I am hopeful, and prayerful, that the Holy Father will take this opportunity to give the Archdiocese of New York and it's Catholic faithful a leader who can provide a solid example for his lay faithful, his Priests, and perhaps for many of the other Bishops currently serving the Church in the United States. Men become priests because they want to be like those priests they see and respect, don't they?
