Our Cardinale, Eagen by name, dispoiler by inclination is an odd bird indeed. Either that or as Dylan sang, 'The times they are a changing.' Immigrants now, Latinos in particular are either, in truth, only nominally Catholic, or just plain agnostic. The immigrants coming into NYC are hardly practicing Catholics who financially support their church. I attend Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest HIlls and can attest to the collection basket going past row after row of hispanics without a sound. This is unfortunate because it says that they are not vested in their church. They do not suport the church and if they become the majority who will pay the maintenance expenses? Each individual parish does not have a trust fund it lives off of. They have to beg their way from week to week. Each week the bulletin shows the deficit at which the parish operates. The demographics of Queens has changed dramatically in the last 8 years. We now have a good deal in common with Hell. The place is full of agnostics and Russian criminals who were driving goats last week in one of the dreadful -istans.
Unfortunately Eagen is not reinvesting in the structures which exist. He did the same thing in Bridgeport, Conn. from whence JP II plucked him to lead the archdiocese. No doubt at the suggestion of someone who knew him as the Pope had no idea who this archbishop in Ct. was from a hole in the wall. This is a great tragedy as these churches will never be built again. If the Church is a business first then we have all come to a bad end. Withholding insurance payments to fix a structure and then closing it on the pretense of it being unsafe is outrageous. If those young priests who wanted to oust Eagen would like to start a more public campaign, please sign me up.
