The talk about class size, money in education, or the number of teachers in the system obscures the issue. Approximately fifty-percent of NY City students do not graduate and I understand there is enough blame to go around to everyone connected with education in the City. However, the largest share of the blame must go to the educators (or those hired to educate, but fail terribly in this responsibility). No wonder the teachers want tenure. If anyone did this bad a job in any other business they would be in the street in minutes.
Virtually every child can be educated, which is not to say that some will learn at a higher level than others. The fact that we allow so many children to fail in the city is a scandal. We doom these children, in an education based economic system, to poverty, crime, and low self esteem. The system must be improved.
