Despite Deaths, McCain Touts Iraq Progress

[McCain] criticized the press for not giving Americans enough information about the recent drop in execution-style sectarian killings, the establishment of security posts throughout the city, and Sunni tribal efforts against Al Qaeda in the western Anbar province. Gee, he's right. The media has been too busy covering the Tal Afar massacre, the Iranian hostage taking, car bombs all over the country. Or the 6 soldiers blown up in the southwest of Baghdad that particular day. It's certainly also hard to get a "Full Picture" when journalists are routinely kidnapped or executed. I think what he really means is "Look over HERE! Not over THERE! IT LOOKS BETTER HERE!" If he's suggesting that the whole war is 'getting better' just because there's been a dip in *Baghdad*.... then he's insulting the intellect of everyone who bothers to pay attention. A dip in Baghdad doesnt say anything about political reconciliation to the ongoing sectarian/power grabs by sunni/shia militias/insurgents. Lulls do not a peace make. I also find people are generally much more receptive to me when I travel surrounded by 100 riflema, with attack helicopters covering my 6. They sometimes give me stuff for free too! They're so nice! I'm sure they were happy to be photographed being nice to McCain too.... or maybe not, since they'd probably be assassinated for collaborating with the Occupiers. But things in general are certainly better than before = "Welcome to Baghdad! Now with 20% fewer torture/executions!"
