The tribute on the 29th was fitting, overdue and just. However, I do not understand how Congress can ask the remaining Tuskegee to pay for their trip to DC, pay for the hotel that was reserved for them (at $209 per night), pay for food, and getting to the Capitol building. Spouses and significant others that were allowed to come (one per Airman) weren't even allowed to be a part of the ceremony. The Airmen were honored and then reunited with those that came with them.

Someone requested that Congress should give them a certificate of thanks/appreciation/recognition for the Medal, the reply from Congress was that "there is no money."

I am so, so proud to know a Tuskegee Airman. I try my best to thank him and give him praise for what he has done, I just wish our government could have done more.

One of my students (I'm an 11th grade US history teacher) asked whether if "the thought that counts" applies to Congress or was it an insult.

Good question.
