If the son would not take such advice, then maybe the secular parents should encourage the son to research each religious community thoroughly. Every parent wants his or her child to achieve lifelong happiness and security. Sometimes offering question examples without judging a choice might open the son's eyes to unnoticed aspects of a religious community under consideration.
