Having an axe to grind is not a phenomenon unique to former Mormons. I imagine every group that could be considered controversial faces strong criticism from former group members. This includes political parties, supporters of particular academic philosophies, religious groups, even the atheist movement. Just as you would not accept John Walker Lindh as the ultimate authority on America, it would be wrong to view disillusioned former members of any of any group a priori as the ultimate authority on the group with which they no longer affiliate. A more reasonable approach would be to hear out the criticisms, see how the group in question responds, make one's own observations to weigh the validity of the points raised by both sides, and then come to an informed conclusion, which will probably lie somewhere in between the views expressed by either side.
