Mark Steyn has it exactly right. Nobody will respect your power and military prowess if they don't think you have the rocks to use it. It is for this reason that all the talk from Bush and Blair that we are confident in a diplomatic solution with Iran is a bad idea. If the possibility of military action is off the table, there is nothing for Iranians to be afraid of. What are we going to do, use very stern language against them? Pass a UN resolution? Refuse to distribute the latest Hollywood movies to Iran?
In order to be respected for our ideas, we must be feared for our strength. In order to curry fear with anyone who might decide to take us on, we must be willing to use our superior military strength.
