The Red Sox May Have Just Made Insanity the Norm

Submitted by Mark Sullo, Nov 17, 2006 13:09

I'm a Boston Red Sox fan, and don't mean to excuse the management for paying such an outrageous price. However, if you're going to talk about baseball economics then let's all admit that "insanity" entered the game long ago. As a fan, long ago, in order to continue appreciating the game I had to drop my feelings about how money was changing the game. IMO, there aren't many players who aren't being paid too much. The problem has long been out of control and beyond the fans control. I don't fault the players, either. They should get what they can... and whether the Red Sox management thought it necessary to bid 51 million or not doesn't really phase me... they wanted to assure their right to negotiate and they did. That they guessed or analyzed wrongly is their problem and can be criticized for many reasons... As a Red Sox fan, I see it as no more insane than dismantling a World Series winning team. In fact, that could be the cause of such a high bid and another reason for Boston fans to scratch their heads, as I'm doing anyway. Play ball!
