Over 50 years ago there were two projects proposed to link Long Island and New Jersey with highways going through Manhaattan in midtown and at Canal St. It might be necessary to reconsider the concept but have deep tunnels rather than above ground highways. There was great opposition to the plan due to the massive surface disruption it caused during construction. The only way we will get rid of the through traffic is if we get it off the streets.
