Fanciest Postal Code Is About To Be Split Up

Submitted by Haywood Jablowmee, Apr 16, 2007 04:17

It's obvious what's going on here. If you look up Presidential campaign contributions, you'll see that 10021 is the zip code that gives the most. Now the government has decided in its infinite wisdom to break up this zip code. Okay, I live here, mine will be changed. All I want to know is why. They say its because there are too many people in this area and that the Post Office can't handle the influx of mail. Alright then, that must mean that 10065 and 10075 will be getting their own Post Offices. Um, no. If all the mail is still going through the same PO, then how does that make anything more efficient? It's not like we live in Queens where you have 31st Ave, 31st St., and 31st Rd confusing the mailman. It's not like we live in the village where all the streets have names. This is mostly a simple numbered grid we are talking about. Are the mail carrriers so stupid that they can't find 61st street because it shares the same zip code as 71st? The mail is seperated by route for the mail carriers anyway. The mail carriers have no problem getting the mail where it needs to go. The Post Office will be handling the same amount of mail it always has. Here is what's fishy...in Manhattan, the zip codes (for the most part, there are several exceptions) get higher the higher you go in Manhattan. Directly across Central Park in the Upper West Side, they are a nice sensibly labeled 10023 (south), 10024 (middle), 10025 (north). That would make sense, wouldn't it? The southern portion of 10021 to keep the existing zip, then middle area would get 10065, and the northern would get 10075. But for some reason, it was decided to give the middle area 10021 and put 10065 on the bottom and 10075 on top. Which makes me wonder...why? I really don't have a problem switching zip codes if its really in order to give us better service. But without getting additional Post Offices, that just won't happen. I think it will actually get worse for the new zip codes while the 10021 zip will enjoy better than ever mail delivery. My guess is that this is all happening because some rich old fart didn't get his birthday card on time and called in a favor from the politician he helped get elected by having him nudge the Post Master to do something to help said rich old fart get his mail faster. That or a few bitchy, uptight rich folk got together because their mail gets delivered later in the afternoon than they'd like. The bottom line is...who will this help? Without additional resources, it won't help the Post Office. Which means it won't help the residents, unless the Post Office has been ordered to prioritize one of the zip codes. So we have to go through the headache of changing our zip code. And it is a big headache. Especially for those of us who work from home and have many business contacts, websites with our shipping address, bills, etc. Don't forget folks, just because this is a fabulously rich zip code doesn't mean we all have gobs of money so shouldn't complain. My wife and I made less than $50,000 (gross) combined last year. We don 't live in an expensive building with a doorman, but above a Sushi place we can't afford to eat in on 1st Ave in the low 60's. There are many others like us who just do our best to get by and really don't appreciate the fact that someone with connections is making all this happen for their own benefit (though I can't figure out what that reall benefit will be). The Post Office will still have to sort all the mail into routes for its carriers. Theoretically, everyone's mail should still take the same amount of time to be delivered. Unless the Post Office has orders to prioritize 1 of the zip codes. Which is what I believe will happen.
