Auction Houses Vs. Dealers

Submitted by Elaine Wechsler, Apr 16, 2007 09:27

Dear NY Sun Editor: I have recently discovered the NY Sun and think that it does wonderful coverage of the art world. The articles on the art world during the last several weeks have been particularly interesting to me since they glaringly expose the fact that the art world sadly is now succumbing to the kind of corporate take over and merger that has filled our newspapers during the last decade. The average working artist as well as art dealer will be hurt by this in the same way as the frenetic condoing has led to people losing their homes and businesses because they simply could not afford upkeep...principly the rents. A certain quality of life is being lost. Young artists and fledgling dealers can no longer live and work in NYC and this leads to a dipersment of art communities where creativity thrives. Mr. Augustine states that this new gallery system will not replace the "nurturing" of artists by art dealers. All I can say is that Mr. Augustine has not been in touch. This nurturing has not really existed generally since the 1960's! We are a culture whose values revolve around money and business and artists today if they want to achieve success (meaning high prices and prestige shows) have joined these ranks. This is a sad commentary.
