Nearly twenty years ago a woman friend of mine, staunchly anti-gun, was sitting in her boyfriend's convertible waiting for him to to return when a would-be car-jacker/mugger/rapist (who knows) grabbed her around the throat and tried to drag her out of the car. She was able to reach into the glove and put her guy's pistol under the thug's nose. She related this to me so as to explain that she'd had a change of heart about the virtue of demonizing inanimate objects.
As tragic as the evil insanity that occurred in Virginia is, outlawing the instrument isn't a real answer. Just ask the mayor of Nagasaki. Guns are impossible to get in Japan. Legally.
Lone nuts should not dictate policy for the public at large, lest we just ban sex for the sake of rape.
