Hearing that Cat Stevens would play at the concert left me feeling, well, sad. Angry and disappointed, yes, but mostly sad. Watching history repeat itself, while people make the same 'ol mistakes, makes me weary. It seems that free people are unable to even recognize when their freedoms are threatened, let alone prepared and willing to fight for them. It isn't the Army of the enemy that is the greatest threat. The threat lies in the little things: the subtle, day to day accomodations that free people make without even noticing the gradual loss of power over their own lives, until it is too late to resist. As a feminist, the growing world power of Fundamentalist Islam fills me with alarm. I'm reminded of Churchill, ignored, shouting into the wind about "The Gathering Storm". I must also admit that I'm pulled between two emotions on the subject. The idea that someone would "insist" that I should be covered from head to toe, because the mere sight of me somehow brings shame on my family makes my blood boil. However, the idea that someone could enforce restrictions on my personal behavior with death-by-stoning punishment, makes my blood run cold.
