How about a practical, prosaic job for our space program (currently going nowhere fast): Throw all of mankind's nuclear waste into the Sun! You cannot possibly damage the Sun. It is one huge nuclear furnace anyway. You wouldn't need propulsion all the way there, either. Just get the package beyond Earth's gravitational pull, point it in the right direction, and give it a slight push. It will eventually get there. Sure, there's a slight risk a "package" will go astray, but no greater than the risks we already accept if we are going to use nuclear power at all. The Yucca Mountain project will never fly, because the people of Nevada are being told they have absolutely no say in the matter. The so-called problem of nuclear waste need not be a problem at all. Think outside the earthbound box!
