The New York City Pedicab Owners' Association (nycpoa.org), is a trade association in existence for nearly two years, formed to create standards in the absence of city standards, complete with a dues-paying membership, a 501(c)6 status, and an elected board of directors and officers. Further, NYCPOA standards could actually exceed any city standard created in the future. Every member company must show proof of insurance, operate safe equipment, and demonstrate that drivers are trained before they start carrying passengers. This is proof the industry favors fair and proper regulation, but not regulation that camouflages a multi-week ban, among other things. Indeed, it was the industry itself that first dialogued with the Mayor's Office of Transportation, in 1998-99.
