The Brilliance of Ancient Pixels

Hi James

I was intrigues to read about the re-emergence of mosaic as a high art form in New York.

I'm involved in trying to re-establish mosaics as a major art form at the heart of London. There are three major strands to what our small group, of mainly volunteers , are doing.

Firstly - we are seeking to prove that mosaic is the perfect visual medium for the "street". In London high art on the street is usually either high up on buildings or on pedestals i.e. looking down at us. Mosaic allows us to put great art at our finger-tips where we can touch and feel it; or even better under our feet.

Secondly - we are working with many people who have come through the criminal justice system - and making a mosaic for the street, in the neighbourhood where they live, allows them to make leave a positive impression, in a way which will last for the rest of their lives. If our idea took off, there could be mosaic studios in many a city and town, keeping people out of prison and making their neighbourhoods look good.

Thirdly - we have based our selves on London's South Bank - a) because this is a great cultural community, and b) it is dominated by cement. We respect the aesthetics of minimalism, but feel that today's architecture should consider the use of mosaic, much more.

Check us out at www.southbankmosaics.com and when you're next in London please drop by our studios and see us bringing colour, life, rhythm and fun back to the constructed public realm.

Cheers
