Developers Mull Uses for Rare Rock Excavated for Tunnels

Submitted by Nathan Glazer, Apr 27, 2007 17:57

One use of Manhattan Schist not mentioned in the Sun story was that it was the major stone for the building of City College at 140th and Convent Avenue early inthe 20th century, and the story is it was the stone excavated for the building of the first New York Subway line. . The original college was designed in a collegiate gothic style, and forms a very impressive complex, only a little more than a mile North of Columbia, a much larger campus. Few--aside from students and former students--are aware of it. More should be. It has been restored at great expense in recent years.
