I agree that pop cultural references are only mildly amusing and are much overused. I don't see how the fact that I simply know something the characters are referring to is supposed to be funny. This is why I can't be in the same room when my wife watches the Gilmore Girls. 85% of the humor in that show is the characters making offhand references to facts they wouldn't know in real life (or at least wouldn't attempt to squeeze into conversation). Those characters have to talk faster than is normal for a human just to fit in all the cultural references.
I disagree, however, that it matters that 12-year-olds do not get a lot of the jokes. "The Simpsons", "Family Guy", and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" are written for adults. "Family Guy" is rated TV-14 (some episodes were TV-MA (thank you Wikipedia), and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" is part of Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim". Animation is not just for kids.
