Mark Moyar, Historian of Vietnam, Finds Academe Hostile to a Hawk

Submitted by Antemurale, May 1, 2007 11:10

This sounds familiar. Over the last 3 years I probably applied for 75 tenure track positions in history. I have a doctorate from a large, middle-rank public university and about 3 years teaching experience at both public private colleges. I have several published books and a spate of articles. In some of the places where I applied I had more publications than the rest of the department combined. Again, no interviews. I have had my applications prepared professionally and letters of recommendation from well-respected academics, several of whom were deans at their respective universities.

In two cases that I know of, the candidate chosen was a newly minted PhD with no publications and no teaching experience beyond grad school.
