As far as I can see, Mr. Husock has failed to make his case in arguing against the source of income legislation. In Montgomery County, Maryland, that legislation is in place and it has helped low income families live in the county -- in mixed-income settings.
Mr. Husock's argument that the use of housing vouchers discourage voucher holders from holding jobs is wrong. He says in his article that only 37 percent of the voucher holders in NY are working. He does not tell you about the remaining 63 percent of voucher holders. I guarantee you that the majority of those voucher holders are either elderly or disabled people who cannot work. It is just this kind of slanted information that fuels NIMBYism. It is just another attack on the poor in this country -- as if being poor were a crime.
Husock doesn't understand that most of the families receiving vouchers want to move up to the middle class. They need a hand up while they move up. With Husock's kind of thinking, the gap between wealthy and poor in this country widens even further -- and the middle class shrinks.
