News reports from Iraq seem to indicate that there are several groups fighting each other as well as the americans. The situation in Iraq seems similar to Afganistan where local leaders/groups want to gain control over parts of the country. By removing Saddam these groups have grown bolder and the death toll in Iraq is now on the rise. If american troops leave Iraq now the entire middle east could become engulfed in violence, terrorism and power struggles.
But I doubt america has the resources to stay the course and so would have to withdraw soon. Al Qaeda may consider an american withdrawal as a victory and may then step up their attacks in Afganisthan. The solution has to be political rather than military else the war would continue elsewhere. Somalia, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Sudan could be the next victims of this war.
