DeLillo Confronts September 11

DeLillo's two best passages (ok, very subjectively, since I've only read four of his books) are 1. the baseball scene in Underworld and 2. the supermarket scene in White Noise. But the technique of these scenes would be wildly inappropriate, too giddily melancholy, too funny, to capture the sense of the American reaction to 9/11. Mr Roloff suggests that the United States has never known war, and he's right about that, we never suffered in war the way Londoners, Dresdeners or Tokyoites did. But it's precisely that sense -- of being under attack without being physically in danger, of being vaguely aware that the next time it might well be nuclear -- that has seeped into the mental lives of even the most anti-Bush liberals. A culture of fear really was born in 2001: I, for one, would like to see *that*, rather than the Manhattan experience, confronted.
