Whenever the English authors, playwrights in particular, deal with education and youth the subject invariably carries an undercurrent of homosexuality or lesbianism. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. How refreshing it would be to have a group of innocents, male or female, taught by Mr. or Mrs. Chipps in which the subject would be the true transmission of knowledge from one generation to another untinged by uncomfortable moments during which one party or the other were manipulated by the other's sexual magnatism.
The English, and to a certain degree the U.S., lost an entire generation of the teaching profession with World War II. And when that void was filled by 'teachers' too young to put their still high gear libidos behind their jobs, which is the transmission of knowledge, that we got the screwey '60's. As a high school/college student of the '60's I was painfully aware of the change in tembre of the teaching profession. An entirely different teacher-type took over teaching and they did a poor job of it. They were too young and still too involved with themselves to be successful teachers. They passed on opinions vs. information and education has been out of whack ever since.
