I think we are jumping to conclusions in this case. While I do understand the argument of the difficulties in sharing a school space, we must not be haste to conclude that this school will become a "madrassa." This school is envisioned as a dual language school, much like the Shuang Wen Academy in Chinatown, a school that has gained great attention for not only its excellent test scores, but also for the fact that each one of its graduates, Chinese or not, becomes fluent in Mandarin. Yet no one protests that the Shuang Wen school is turning its students into Buddhists or communists. Why should we expect the same for this school? Especially since "Arabic" does not always equal "Muslim". As a New York City resident, believe me, there is no way religion, Islam or otherwise, is entering a New York City public school. Personally, the knee-jerk reaction I've seen to this whole situation makes me think we need more education about Arabic culture in this country.
