Without understanding the context of China's quest for energy in Africa, it is easy for Western developed nations to point fingers and denounce a developing nation for cozying up to dictators and ignoring human rights. However, one may remember that when China wished to cozy up, and indeed, purchase an American oil company (Unocal), the US government vehemently objected and forced the deal to be dropped. It seems that no matter what China does, Western nations will find it objectionable. But this is not surprising at all to many neutral observers -- it is human nature to suppress competitors under the cover of moral superiority. Western nations have done that for the last 500 years. Perhaps it will be China's turn in the next 500?
