When the existence of these movements first became apparent after 9/11, their alliance seemed quite possible when one looked at the facts. Islamists were, obviously, against the US,
and while the democratic forces had won the Cold War, its practitioners, forgot to
consider there were millions of losers. Europe since the end of WWII, has had a considerable
Communist and Socialist following during the Cold War, about which we really heard very little.
They were reduced to being irrelevant, in essence, but that did not mean they had a conversion to
democracy and capitalism. The Communist presence in Latin America as well in the Sixties and Seventies
against whom we fought, also, appeared to be losers. The former Soviet Union ,also, had training camps for terrorists like the PLO.
( One facet does seem surprising and that is the associations of the Saudis and Russia., which would be a most interesting and important topic for a NY Sun analysis.)
Once the post Cold War Era ensued, the Communist sympathizers were all left high and dry. Then, 9/11 happened, and what opportunities presented themselves were grabbed and expanded upon with momentum.
