I believe that it was Stalin's last atheistic gesture, to shake his fist in rage up at the cieling. Yes, he knew God was there and after he was dust and memory that God would be in the same full flourish He has always been in in spite of little men's anger. Hitchens is probably the victim of his own frustrating mortality, much as Uncle Joe was. In the end he also knows who the winner will be, and it won't be Christopher.
