"If we do not have the will to stomach a prolonged war against our sworn mortal enemies in Iraq, how long will it be before Afghanistan becomes too costly an expedition in blood and treasure to continue? Or before all those thousands of fanatical Islamists, once victorious, set their sights from the battlefields of those two troubled nations to our own cities and citizens? "
Er, no body is saying that we should stop fighting the terrorists in Afghanistan. In fact there were suggestions to redeploy some of the troops from iraq to afghanistan.
Also, Islamic fanaticists have already set their sights on our cities. There was the WTC attack in 93, and ofcourse 9/11. Another question that people like you should think about is this - If some one wants to seriously harm the US, why would they be fighting US troops HALF A WORLD away from the US.
The deadliest terrorists are those whom you dont know and dont see. They dont come out and fight fair. They dont engage you in their own backyard endlessly. There is no shortage of terrorists in the Middle East or any shortage of hatred for the US in that region. If you honestly wanted to completely wipe out terrorists in the Middle East, you would have to nuke that part of the world.
Read Vic Gold's (Barry Goldwater's secretary) comments about how the US contained a far worse threat from the Soviet Union who had more nuclear weapons than any of the terrorists can ever imagine of possesing.
The most pressing need of the day is to contain nuclear proliferation genie let out by Pakistan and grabbed by Iran. The only reason the US trooops should be in Iraq today is a moral one - to clean up the mess it has made in entering Iraq with just enough troops not to lose.
