This is an excellent article on housing cost comparisons, but the author's comment ("Their pleasant winters are offset by terrible summers.") fails to acknowledge the important reality that winters in Texas do not require snow shovels or snow blowers. One can enjoy the outdoors 12 months of the year without heavily bundling up. The North's harsh winters have been traded for the South's hot summers, and In the summer, there is the abundant and omnipresent air conditioning. Each region has its pluses and minuses. And land is extremely cheap and abundant in the South, which partially helps to explain the lower housing prices. As one who has spent over a decade in the North, I can make this comparison based upon personal experiences.
