I write these words in earnest and not as a snipe. You mention your 20 year old abstract work vs. your more recent narrative work. Was this an organic shift on your part which was natural to your evolution or does a painter shift his content in response to what others are currently doing around him? Possibly more accurately stated, is this a response to the market. Creativity is a lonely road so I can certainly understand the second choice. There wern't any expressionists working in David's studio in 1790, however, we do admire the rebel who breaks from the crowd and creates a new vision. Just as Manet boldly evolved from Delacroix by creating his own vision. I find what initiates creativity a fascinating subject. When Reynolds painted, Neo-Classicism ruled and his using Classical & Renaissance compositions as models for his own subjects was an innovative step away from the tradition of Lely and Hogarth. Perhaps painting is a subconscious reflection of the intellectual culture of the day as much as a relection of anything else.
Terry, where can I see your work? Is there a web-site or a gallery which illustrates/carries your work? I'd genuinely be intersted in seeing the 2 phases of your work. Thanks. Josh
