I don't recall any pictures of Mrs. Pelosi ever donning a veil as the author claims. Frankly, I am calling his credibility into question. During her walk through the Damascus marketplace, she wore a scarf - around her neck - and then proceeded to place it on her head upon entering the mosque that she was there to visit. A simple Google image search of "Pelosi Damascus mosque" will reveal photos of Mrs. Pelosi walking through the marketplace without a veil, and with the scarf in question tied around her neck. Based on the photos, one can see that the author is misleading, to say the least. Incidentally, in an October, 2005 visit to Tajikstan, Condoleeza Rice also wore a headscarf when visiting a mosque there.
