Forty Years Ago, Pitchers Threw Less Than Is Believed

In 1963, Sandy Koufax, with his 311 IP (7.8 IP per start), threw 111 pitches per start. Pedro Martinez, in 2004 (6.6 IP per start), threw 106 per start. The difference in "workload" is that Koufax had 6 more starts. But, once they were on the mound, they each threw the exact same number of pitches. The pitchers from the 1970s though, those guys pitched much more.
