Though I frequently agree with Mr. Halkin's articles about Israel, I believe he was way off base on his comments about the Temple Mount, whose significance to the Moslem faith is only apparent when Jews have a possibility of accessing it. During the entire period from 1948-1967 when it was in Arab hands, and no Jew could get anywhere near it , nor the "old city " of Jerusalem for that matter, there were few if any Arab heads of state who had any interest in visiting this holy place. Indeed, when Jews pray all over the world they face Jerusalem and when they pray in Israel they face the Temple Mount. When Muslims pray they face Mecca even as their backs face Jerusalem. Furthermore, the comment about " herds of animals..." was a ubiquitous swipe at a Temple for which the Jews have prayed for 2000 years.
