Colleges can charge whatever they want because they know that actually paying for it is no longer a problem for students because students can just borrow whatever they need. Since young people are more likely to be of the "have now, pay later" mindset, they are easy prey. Unfortunately, those borrowers learn later on that high student loan bills are a drag on buying a home, affording children and saving for retirement.
