In the Hour of Our Pride

Not a word from Mr. Murphy about the most destructive analogy of all. Rome became soft and vulnerable through its latter day reliance on mercenaries in confronting its enemies. Even as we are. Think Blackwater, Halliburton, et al. and couple this practice with our patrician reluctance to fight, as shown in our elitist resistance to the draft. Think multiple draft deferments during the Vietnamese war. And our current practice of enlisting foreigners with the carrot of citizenship. Then there's our most recent ploy of lowering the bar to permit our more uneducated and even criminal types to enlist.
