College Leaders Line Up Against Rankings

Robert Massa, Vice-President for enrollment at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, implies that because U.S. News and World Report is in business and profits from its enterprise it is disqualified as a source of ethical journalism. This knee-jerk devaluation of enterprise has come to be expected among both academics and their managers, such as Mr. Massa, and it is perhaps symptomatic of the misguided mediocrity that characterizes so many American colleges and universities these days. If the magazine's ratings of colleges is to be faulted for anything, it is more likely for being too generous toward those institutions.
