CBS Betrays Flaws With Cronkite Slight

Submitted by Jerome Washington, May 22, 2007 18:42

I agree that CBS is on a downhill skid, somewhat ahead of NBC and ABC. After its Opie and Anthony aired a gross "comedy" routine that joked of RAPING Condoleeza Rice and Laura Bush, they gave the pair a slap on the hand with a month off and called it punishment.

But I am equally no fan of Cronkite. I was. When he was in the anchor chair, he did not shove his opinions down our throats, as Couric, Jennings, Williams, Rather, and Gibson do or did. But in recent years he has used the trust we gave him to try and undermine the current president. Like Bush or hate him, he is the elected president. Cronkite has misused the trust. I do not honor him, nor do I admire him as I once did.

I too am a journalist, and my editor insists on a bipartisan delivery of news. My editor still believes, as I do, that Americans are smart enough to make up their own minds when presented with facts that are not skewed or hidden by the journalist's own opinions. I wish I could say the same for the networks, for CNN and MSNBC, and for most print journalists.
