The only thing that would've staved off the N. Vietnamese attack was U.S. air power, and that would've meant yet more American casualties on top of the 58K we'd already suffered. Congress was wise to pull the plug on the thing when they did.

There's a lesson here for Iraq as well: Americans help those who help themselves.

I see. We cut off military aid to prevent them from helping themselves, because Americans help those who help themselves. It was necessary to ensure their defeat by cutting off all aid, because Americans help those who help themselves. We couldn't give them even the opportunity to hold off the N. Vietnamese by themselves, because Americans help those who help themselves. Another logical liberal "thought".
