in response to reader comment: Put a cap on years a person can live in public housing

"Instead of selling. Why not just put a cap on the number of years a family can live in the projects? Right now, there is a long waiting list for these apartments in public housing and not many people are moving out. The article points out families stay an average of 17 years. Wouldn't it make more sense to give a family only five years or so to live in the projects. It would give families a sense of urgency to improve their financial being and move out of the projects and would provide affordable housing for other families that have been on the waiting list. I'm sure people want to improve their economic standing in life and our current system only perpetuates people to not want to move out of the projects creating a shortage of housing for families that really need it."

FYI: As a person's income goes up, so does their rent. Everyone does not pay the same rent. I believe the amount is 30% of a person's income.

Also, housing is one aspect of the picture. Low wages are the main factor that people need affordable housing.

I'm not sure what you perception is of the people in public housing, but many of them are hard working individuals with 9-5 jobs that just don't pay much.
