Except for a few who thought Iraq would gladly supply us with our oil needs for all time, and throw flowers, not bombs at us, in the meantime, no one seriously expected Iraq to become part of the United States as the states you mention did. It's one thing to batttle for our territory. It's another thing to battle for someone else's.
