It is easy for Rudy to fend off a few protesters and a hungry lawyer when they attack his strong point, sound leadership during 9/11. And if the attacks are sporadic as they are now, the encounters will probably work in Rudy's favor. But if and when Rudy becomes the Republican candidate, he will face a coordinated attack from Democrats. It will be like the difference between scattered rifle attacks and a heavy artillery barrage. Eisenhower easily survived such a coordinated attack and was elected president in 1952. Folks could not be fooled about Ike's leadership ability. But George Bush Sr., a war hero with an impressive resume, succumbed to an attack on his leadership and lost his bid for a second term. Rudy has a solid history, defeating the Mafia and handling 9/11, not as complete as Ike's, but better than Bush Sr. who was a war hero as a young man. My guess is that the chronicle of Rudy's performance on television during 9/11 will be difficult to tarnish. Only mistakes and exposes of his weaknesses, unanswered, could deat him if he can get the nomination.
