Yes - Mr. Samuelson gets it exactly right; I couldn't have said it better, though I tried in a letter to the Times about this very subject last week. Anyway, if we are to get off the Arab oil tit and really get serious about alternative fuels, and we are too spoiled to accept anything that would be an overt hardship, like a gas tax, then market forces are the only way to go. Americans seem to have completely forgotten the concept of sacrifice - except for those whose family members are dying in Iraq at least partly in a misguided attempt to preserve our oil supplies. The democrats need to understand the concept of unintended consequences and wise up, sit back, and quietly cheer on higher gas prices.
