Art Fairs and the Changing Art Market

Once again, another "arts" story that concerns the rich, for the rich, and is about the rich all of whom seem to be trading art faster than stock on Wall Street. The piece implies that there are artists out there so overwhelmed with cranking out product for the rich that it's hard for the artist to respond to dealers. The notion is patently absurd. I'm an artist and I've never met anyone so burdened with requests for art that they can't keep up. Are you kidding me? The REALITY is that the cultural gatekeepers like curators and gallery owners CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO EVEN RETURN OUR EMAILS let alone being out there beating the bushes in search of art. The culural gatekeepers treat us like dirt. They HATE artists. Often enough, they hate art despite their public protests to the contrary. The big bucks they get KEEP US MARGINALIZED. Art is not about art. It's about the market. These people are INDIFFERENT to art and it doesn't matter how many art fairs there are. That they can't get enough art is a ludicrous fantasy. What they can't get enough of -- let us call it greed -- is CASH.
