Sonny Carson Supporters Commandeer a Brooklyn Park
in response to reader comment: that something

Does anyone have a source for more information about the quote in the Times
by Councilman Michael Nelson from Brooklyn alleging that Carson didn't want
any white Jews teaching children in the public schools and that he would carve
his initials in her chest. Does anyone know the CONTEXT of this remark??

Thanks.

Also, Gary, while the facts you give about Robert E. Lee are true, your conclusion that
he was "opposed" to slavery needs to be rethought. Even if his motive for commanding
the Confederate armies was for the South's autonomy and independence, a major consequence
of that independence certainly was the continuation of slavery; the economics of slavery
were really behind the South's rhetoric of autonomy. Also, even if personally opposed to slavery, his actions
proved him to be a far cry from any real abolitionist, or even from a racist Northerner opposed to
slavery. To say the best about Lee, he was a morally torn individual with a very conflicted life, and
MUCH MORE SO than Sonny Carson, whose anti-semitic and anti-white statements (and perhaps personal threats if Councilman Nelson's comment is to be trusted and hasn't omitted some important context)
were still just WORDS, unlike the concrete years of leadership Lee gave to the Confederacy that served to preserve (whether Lee wanted it to or not) the institution of slavery.
